How to fix the error ‘Data Request Failed’

There have been times that I am typing and hit the Command shortcut key in TradeStation by mistake, but keep typing and hit enter.  This is just one of the ways I’ve found to make TradeStation generate the error “Data request failed: Incorrect symbol”.  What happens is that TradeStation sets the default symbol to whatever was typed, which causes a problem loading Trading Apps, such as MultiWalk.

If this happens and you try to run MultiWalk, you will see this:

There are two ways to correct this.

1. Set a correct default symbol

Open a chart in TradeStation and click on Data->Edit Symbol:

Enter a correct symbol, click on “Set as Default” and then click OK.

Try to load MultiWalk again.  It should load now.  However, if the MultiWalk project you are trying to open still gives the “Data request failed: Incorrect symbol” error,  then following this next step.

2. Import the MultiWalk Project

Remove MultiWalk from the workspace.  Add a new MultiWalk app to the workspace and click on Project Files/Folders -> Import Project Setup.  Navigate to your MultiWalk project and import the setup/configuration file.  This will restore your project.
